🍿 Fear Street: Part One – 1994: Detailed Plot Synopsis

Opening Massacre at Shadyside Mall

The film opens in 1994 at the Shadyside Mall, where Heather Watkins, a bookstore employee, is brutally attacked by her friend, Ryan Torres. Ryan proceeds to murder several other mall employees in a gruesome massacre. Sheriff Nick Goode eventually kills Ryan, ending the carnage. This event is portrayed as typical for Shadyside, which the media dubs the ‘murder capital of the United States.’

The Curse of Sarah Fier

The narrative introduces the contrasting towns of Shadyside and Sunnyvale. Sunnyvale is portrayed as affluent and safe, while Shadyside is plagued by violence and misfortune. Many Shadyside teenagers believe this disparity is due to a curse placed upon the town by Sarah Fier, a witch executed in 1666. Deena Johnson, however, is skeptical of the Fier witch legend.

Reunions and Bloody Accidents

Deena, recently heartbroken after breaking up with her closeted girlfriend Sam, encounters her again at a vigil for the mall massacre victims. Sam has moved to Sunnyvale. A brawl erupts between Shadyside and Sunnyvale students. Later, while returning home, Sam’s boyfriend, Peter, harasses the Shadyside bus, leading to an accident when Deena tries to retaliate. Sam survives the crash but experiences a vision of Sarah Fier before being hospitalized.

The Resurrection of Shadyside Killers

Following the accident, Deena and her friends are stalked by figures they initially mistake for Peter and his friends. However, Peter is murdered by Skull Mask, revealed to be Ryan Torres resurrected. Other Shadyside killers from the past also begin to reappear, including Ruby Lane. The group discovers that the car accident disturbed Sarah Fier’s grave, and Sam’s blood spilled on her bones, resurrecting the town’s infamous murderers.

Fighting the Curse

Josh, Deena’s brother, a history enthusiast, deduces that Sarah Fier’s curse is responsible for Shadyside’s history of violence. The group tries various methods to stop the killers, including attempting to rebury Fier’s remains. They are attacked by the Camp Nightwing Killer. They realize the killers are drawn to Sam’s blood and set a trap at the school, but the killers continue to reanimate.

Sacrifice and Resurrection

Desperate to end the curse, Sam reluctantly agrees to be sacrificed. The group plans to temporarily kill Sam and then revive her, hoping this will break the witch’s hold. They learn of C. Berman, a survivor from the 1978 Camp Nightwing massacre, who supposedly died and was revived. They attempt to contact her but receive no response. They put their dangerous plan into action at a supermarket pharmacy.

Personal Review

I really wanted to love this movie because of the 90s setting and the R.L. Stine connection. The opening scene in the mall was fantastic, a total throwback to the Scream era! The soundtrack was on point, too. I was a bit disappointed by the characters being kind of unlikeable. Overall, it’s a fun, gory movie night choice but could have been much better. The Kate supermarket scene and the revival attempt were intense. I am still excited for the next parts!
