🍿 Hot Tub Time Machine 2: Detailed Plot Synopsis
Lou’s Success and the Shooting
Five years after the first film, Lou, Nick, and Jacob are living changed lives thanks to their time-traveling exploits. Lou has become a wealthy tech mogul, Nick a famous musician, and Jacob… well, he’s Lou’s butler. At a party celebrating Lou’s success, he’s mysteriously shot in the groin by an unknown assailant wearing a tuxedo.

Journey to the Future
Hoping to prevent the shooting, Nick and Jacob use the hot tub time machine to go back to the past, but they end up ten years in the future instead. They quickly deduce that they’re in an alternate timeline and that Lou’s killer is from the future. They must now navigate this unfamiliar landscape to find the shooter and save Lou.

Adam Jr. and the Hunt for the Killer
In the future, they encounter Adam Jr., the son of Adam (John Cusack’s character from the first movie), who joins their quest. The group explores the absurdities of the future, dealing with self-driving cars with homicidal tendencies and bizarre game shows. They investigate various suspects, leading them through a series of chaotic events.

The Wedding and the Revelation
The investigation leads them to Adam Jr.’s wedding, where secrets are revealed. They discover that Adam Jr. is the shooter, motivated by seeing Lou having sex with his bride-to-be, Jill. A chaotic confrontation ensues, and the group must find a way to return to the past and prevent the shooting.

💥 Hot Tub Time Machine 2 Reviews
Personal Review
Okay, so I went into this expecting total nonsense, and that’s exactly what I got. The first movie was kinda funny in a dumb way, but this one? It’s like they took all the dumbest parts and amplified them. There were a few moments that made me chuckle, especially the self-driving car bit, but mostly it’s just Rob Corddry being over-the-top ridiculous. Honestly, I missed John Cusack. I love Adam Scott, but replacing Cusack just didn’t work. I can’t say I hated it, but I definitely wouldn’t watch it again sober.

Professional Reviews
- IMDB: “While the first film had surprising wit, this sequel descends into crude, offensive gags with very few laughs. Corddry’s character is amplified to an unbearable level, and the cleverness is replaced with endless penis jokes. A major misstep.
- Rotten Tomatoes: “Absent John Cusack, ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ swaps heart for tastelessness, offering a series of gross-out gags in place of genuine humor, making for a largely unfunny and forgettable sequel.
- Metacritic: “The few laughs are overshadowed by over-the-top crude gags, making the film a lazy attempt to capitalize on its predecessor’s success. The story has plot issues and the jokes fall flat for the most part.
Audience Reactions
The jokes are funny for the first hour then they get old: Some viewers appreciated its ridiculousness and found parts hilarious, while many missed John Cusack and felt it lacked the first film’s charm.
Overall Consensus: Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is widely considered a disappointing sequel that lacks the heart and humor of the original, relying on crude gags and failing to deliver consistent laughs.
