🍿 The Colony: Detailed Plot Synopsis
Arrival on Earth
In a distant future where Earth is ravaged by climate change and war, humanity’s elite fled to Kepler-209. Two generations later, Kepler-209 suffers from infertility due to radiation. A mission, Ulysses 2, is sent to Earth to determine if it is habitable and can restore fertility. The capsule carrying Blake, Tucker, and Holden crashes on a tidal flat.

Captured by the Muds
Holden is killed during the crash. Blake and Tucker are captured by a group of indigenous humans known as the ‘Muds.’ Tucker, gravely wounded, takes his own life. The Muds remove technology from the capsule and imprison Blake, who is nearly drowned but saved by a Mud girl named Maila.

The Raiders and Gibson’s Plan
The Muds are attacked and kidnapped by a group led by Gibson, a survivor of the Ulysses 1 mission led by Blake’s father. They are taken to a cargo ship where Gibson reveals his plan to repopulate Kepler-209 using the Muds’ fertility. He is educating the children, but in reality, plans to enslave the fertile Mud women.

Blake’s Choice
Blake learns she is fertile. She discovers her father is alive but imprisoned by Gibson for opposing the Kepler residents’ return. Blake chooses to side with the Muds, freeing the captive girls and their families. She understands the Muds are now the future of Earth and humanity.

💥 The Colony Reviews
Personal Review
I really wanted to love ‘The Colony’ more than I did. The visuals are stunning – the desaturated, muddy Earth is hauntingly beautiful. Nora Arnezeder gives a solid performance, but the story feels a bit predictable. The concept of a return to Earth after climate disaster is compelling, but ultimately the plot felt rushed. I wish they had spent more time fleshing out the world and the characters’ motivations. Still, there were moments that really stuck with me.

Professional Reviews
- Nerdly: “‘Silent Zone’ VOD Review says: The direction is good, the atmosphere well thought out and the movie well executed. And that on a budget that is probably orders of magnitude smaller than an American film. There are themes of racial supremacy, protecting the Earth and a general moral that ethics are important and the means are not justified by the end.
- Original: “This is a very good looking movie, but the story is a bit bland. It’s one of those slow-burn, post-apocalyptic dramas where the visuals do most of the heavy lifting. Iain Glen is great in this role, but I felt like the ending was rushed and didn’t quite live up to the potential of the premise.
- Original: “A German/Swiss Sci-fi movie set somewhere between 100 and 150 years in the future. The wealthy elite escaped an earth where disasters and climate change made the planet uninhabitable. The production level is excellent, this never feels cheap or low budget and it can hold it’s own to flicks with double the budget. Acting, score, pace, directing, editing, etc is all at a professional level. Critics who do this for a living can probably give a more nuanced view but never was it so bad that it bothered me or broke the illusion.
